This was the first time for me to birdwatch in South Africa so I was very excited. Namibia is located on the dry southwestern corner of Africa and is also one of the Southern Africa 's most rewarding and friendly birding countries. The weather of central part is very hot in the daytime and cool at night, whilst the northern part is cooler and has some rain. The hottest day I've experienced was 37°C.

Rock Hyrax

Not long after our arrival in Namibia , I found out that I had lost my luggage, so did Benji and Gerold. The baggage reclaim officers said that they would try to find and send them to our hotel. I thought I was still lucky because I still had my Nikon D80 + 70-300 mm lens, binocular and spotting scope with me (but not lucky enough for the tripod, it's in my missing luggage!). Then we headed towards Windhoek town to look for some toothpaste and brush, continued to Spitzkoppe and stayed overnight at Erongo Wilderness Lodge situated in spectacular surrounding in rugged Erongo Mountains .

The first mammal we faced was Chacma Baboons. They were crossing the road. I was very excited at the beginning until I realised that many of them could be seen everyday. :-).

Next morning, we walked around the lodge and found many birds including Carp's Tit, Violet-backed Starling, Monteiro's Hornbill, plenty of White-browed Sparrow-Weavers, Short-toed Rock Thrush, Rockrunner, and some Rock Hyrax, sun-bathing on the rock.

Rosy-faced Lovebird

The area close to the restaurant located several water holes where many birds congregated and taking photos from the shade of the building was fantastic. Here, we saw some spectacular species like Melba Finch, Cape Bunting , Freckled Pigeon, Great Sparrow, Grey-headed Sparrow, Red-eyed Bulbul , Rosy-faced Lovebird, Dassie Rat, the hyperactive Short-snouted Elephant-shrew and Black Mongoose.

After breakfast of the next morning, we headed further north to the western edge of Etosha National Park .

Local dressing

We always stopped if we saw something interesting such as Common Fiscal Shrike, and Tractrac Chat. We also paid five Namibian Dollars for taking photos with local people in their traditional dressing. Lunch was on the way at Huab Lodge with the good view of Madagacar Bee-eater and Cinnamon-breasted Rock-bunting. Toko Lodge in Kamanjab town was our base tonight and finally we got our luggage back. Excellent! Later we went exploring the nearby wilderness at Hobatere Lodge.

We also saw Hartman's Mountain Zebra, Giraffe, Greater Kudu, Warthog, Springbok, Gemsbok (Southern Oryx) and Chacma Baboon attracted to a waterhole. Our nice dinner was Kudu and Springbok streak from the hunting game.

After dark we had a unique opportunity to spend some time at a floodlit waterhole. I waited at waterhole until midnight where I saw three Black Rhinos and two Black-backed Jackals. They came out to drink water and sleep near the waterhole.

The next day we travelled eastwards from Halali towards the exit gate at Namutoni, and continued to Kavango area. The road took us through the dense thorny savannah and well-developed tropical woodland, south of Etosha National Park .

We arrived at our camp on the bank of the Kavango River in the late afternoon and stayed overnight near Popa Falls . We still had time for birding near the river, where we found Rock Pratincoles, Water Dikkop, Brown Firefinch, African Openbill, African Green Pigeon, African Paradise Flycatcher, Malachite Kingfisher, Hartlaub's Babbler, African Fish Eagle and White-bellied Sunbird.

Bateleur

Situated along the Kavango River just north of Botswana , the unique Mahango Game Reserve protects habitats ranging from attractive papyrus swamps to climax teak woodland and fantastic riverine woodland. The adjacent woodland was home to amazing numbers of birds including Bateleur, Wattled Crane, Long-toed Plover, Saddle-billed Stork, Spur-winged Goose, Woodland Kingfisher, African Jacana, Wattled Lapwing, Slaty Egret, Jacobin Cuckoo, Blue Waxbill, Yellow-billed Oxpecker, Spotted Dikkop, Hamerkop

After lunch we proceeded to the south towards our afternoon destination, Roy 's Camp, where we found Black-faced Babbler, Crowned Plover, Wattled Starling, Grey Go-away bird and Fork-tailed Drongo.

Marabou Stork

After an early breakfast we headed south along the main highway to REST, the Raptor Research Center in Otjiwarongo. We had a unique opportunity to view the vulture feeding where Lappet-faced Vulture, White-backed Vulture and Marabou Stork gathered for a feast. Maria Diekman, the project coordinator, showed us around the center.

After lunch we departed for Windhoek and took our flights back to our hometowns.

White-backed Vultures

In total, we saw 305 birds, 257 of which were lifers for me, and 37 mammals.
