27th - 29th July 2007 : Krung Ching Waterfall , Khao Luang National Park, Nakorn Si Thammarat Province.
Khao Luang National Park
Khao Luang National Park

We (Jan and Tu) went to bird-watch in the southern part of Thailand with Johan and Pairoaw Svensson. Krung Ching Waterfall was a substation of Khao Luang National Park where had many resident birds and different species from other part of Thailand. It had a small trail to the big waterfall about 3.7 kilometers from the headquater and was very good trail for birding.

Krung Ching Waterfall was very far from Bangkok (about 700 kilometers) so we left in evening in order to arrived in the next morning and we didn't lost time for birding. Started birding around camping area where had many fig and wild banana trees. We'd just sit and wait at banana flowers we can see many birds come to feed its such as Little, Grey-breasted, Spectacled Spiderhunter and Purple-naped Sunbird. We walked into the trail , packed for lunch and came out in evening everyday. Unlucky for long holiday, many tourists walked to the waterfall so it's quite busy along the trail, some day had heavy rain in the afternoon and we can't see night birds because of noisy tourists. After rain tourists went back and birds came out. Every evening about 5 pm that was a good time to see White-crowned Hornbills because they always called and perched at the high tree near camp site.

Gold-whiskered Barbet

Bird of this trip was Great Argus. This specise was very difficult to see in the nature you can hear only its very loud call and it was very sensitive. We saw a female walked across trail very fast, it looked frightened when it saw us. We thinked it'd just finished to drink water at small stream near the trail. Fantastic! We're very lucky.

We saw a total of 68 species of birds and other animals seen : White-handed Gibbon, Dusky Langur, Sunda Colugo (Flying Lemur), Burmese Striped Squirrel, Common Treeshrew, Cream-coloured Giant Squirrel, Black Giant Squirrel, Plantain Squirrel, Low's Squirrel, Three-striped Ground Squirrel, Mountain Crabs, Reticulated Python, Mangrove Snake, Forest Crested Lizard, Earless Lizard and Malayan Giant Frog.
